Disclosure: I received the Motorola Talkabout T107 Two-Way Radios for review purposes. Opinions are my own.
We live in a neighborhood where kids walk to school by themselves. I often look at them and think “NO WAY am I letting my kid do that when she’s that age.” In a lot of cases, there are two or three of them that walk together, so they look after each other. And if that were the case for us, I might be a little more likely to let that happen. We live super close to the school and there is a crossing guard on every corner.
The chances of something happening are slim. But I worry. Until I checked out the Motorola Talkabout T107 Two-Way Radios, I just assumed that all of these little kids have cell phones. Which are banned at school.
Now I think they’ve simply got walkie talkies.
As soon as the 2-way radios came, we popped in some AAA batteries (unfortunately not included) and took them out for a test drive. I live uphill from the school, and the mountain to valley range is up to 16 miles. School is a little less than a mile from me. I sent my daughter and her father down the hill and talked to them the entire way. The neighborhood range is 0.5 miles, and I’d say that that’s probably what you’d call our area.
We had zero problems communicating. I can’t imagine being 3 miles away from my kid on open water, so that range, however impressive, wasn’t something I tested. Regarding range, things that can affect it are terrain, weather, and electromagnetic interference.
The T107 series is compatible with other FRS/GMRS 2-way radios and works across 22 channels, so you’ll be able to connect with friends and family easily and instantly. It’s great in situations where kids walk to school on their own. Because the price point is under $100, it’s not the end of the world if your child happens to lose it or break it. In my daughter’s case, I worry about other kids stealing her things. She brought a skeleton key in once for show and tell and it disappeared out of her desk. I was disappointed for her because she liked the key so much, but thankfully it wasn’t anything of real value.
Speaking of durability, we haven’t had any issues.
Ours have been dropped and banged into stuff and still work perfectly fine. And we didn’t need to buy expensive cases and screen protectors for them! They also came with handy belt clips, so you don’t have to throw them in a backpack. That’s just our method of doing things.
Another thing I like about these two-way radios is that they’re tiny.
At 5.22 H x 1.91 W x 1.10 D inches and 0.25 lb, they fit perfectly in her little hands. A big bulky piece of equipment just wouldn’t have worked for us. These are a great size for children. And let’s not forget, they’re pink.
What little girl doesn’t want a set of pink walkie talkies for Christmas?
All in all, I think the Motorola Talkabout T107 set is a great tool for communicating with your family.
Whether they’re on the playground, at school, or the other side of a campground, this set of 2-way radios will make you feel safe and secure knowing you can get in touch with them with the press of a button.
