Fitness in Just 10 Minutes a Day

What’s the minimum amount of exercise you need to be fit and healthy? The answer really depends on the person, their genetics, and their lifestyle. Most experts say that you need 30 to 60 minutes of cardio and/or strength training per day for optimal fitness. I’m not going to tell you that exercising for an hour a day won’t help you – experts say it helps tremendously! However, it is possible to accomplish great things in a shorter amount of time – even 10 minutes a day.

For those of us who have to ease our way back into an exercise routine (notice that I used the word “us”), even ten minutes a day of exercise can open the door to a healthier lifestyle. Ten minutes a day this week can turn into fifteen minutes a day next week, and 20 minutes a day the week after that. 

So what’s the easiest way to get those ten minutes in?

Spread it throughout the day.

Squeeze in 2 minutes of exercise at 9 am, 12 pm, 3 pm, 6 pm, and 9 pm. Even the biggest couch potato can get up and exercise for two minutes during a commercial!

What exercises are best?

Assuming that you’re reading this because you’re out of shape, start with something simple. Put one foot in front of the other and get walking!  You can do it at any time and anywhere. When you’re home in front of the TV, get down on the floor and do some crunches during commercials. Pop in a video game and play Just Dance with the kids. There are so many ways to get in some quick physical activity!

Focus on exercises that strengthen your core. The core muscles aid in posture, digestion, and overall physical fitness. Because it’s impossible to strengthen your core without “accidentally” benefiting other muscle groups, core exercises help your entire body. Before you know it, you’ll be trading in that muffin top for a 6 pack!

Choose exercises that are fun. Trust me when I tell you that I’m not a fan of exercise. My treadmill is in front of a television set, because that’s the only way I’d actually use it! Thanks to Amazon Prime and Netflix, I almost forget I’m exercising! (Almost.)

The key to weight loss and fitness is to start now. If you only have two minutes, then two minutes it is. Today, two minutes, tomorrow, three. 6 months from now? You’ll be running circles around your friends and family. It all starts with just ten minutes a day.

    great tips.. i have no problem dieting but hate working out so i think the tip to spread it out is good for me.

    This is such great advice! At work, I started walking during lunch. A lot of hills and now i can do it without a break!
