I received The Nocturnals Series for review purposes; Opinions are my own.
Let me start by saying that my daughter has always been terrified of foxes. Somewhere around age two, she saw the video on TV for What Does the Fox Say and it scared her for the next 5 years. She was so afraid that you couldn’t even speak the F word in the house. That was until I introduced her to the Nocturnals series and her new BFF, Dawn the fox.
The Nocturnals is a series of books written by Tracey Hecht.
The stories feature a group of 3 unlikely friends; Dawn, a fox, Tobin, a pangolin, and Bismarck, a Sugar Glider. Because they’re all Nocturnal, they take on the things that go bump in the night together as a team. The books are full of adventure and feature lessons about inclusion, friendship, and bravery. They’re also pretty humorous.
The Nocturnals books are targeted toward middle grades, but there is also a set for early readers; the grow and read series. This series is more colorful and contain cartoon-ish pictures. My daughter is an advanced reader, so she was finished in an afternoon with all three. Now she’s moved on to the bigger books.
One of the things I love about the books is that educational activity guides are also available.
If you’re an educator of any sort, that’s a huge bonus to the book series. On the website, you’ll find an entire page with resources for educators. The Nocturnals Educator Guides contain lessons and activity sheets that are aligned to the Language Arts Common Core State Standards. The Nocturnals Next Generation Science Standards Guides are also available via the website (for free!) and help to teach kids about things like poaching, volcanos, and of course, nocturnal animals. This series of books offers so much more than just fun reading material.
The best part about this series of books is that my daughter isn’t afraid of foxes anymore. Dawn the fox is one of the “good guys” and it’s changed her perspective on the animal altogether. She even brought her Dawn the Fox stuffed animal in to school for show and tell. I wish I’d come across the series about 4 years ago!
The Nocturnals books make a really nice Christmas gift for any kid on your list this year. I’ll be getting some for my friend’s daughter, too! They’re appropriate, exciting, and sure to be a well-loved gift!
